Engineering note

Why we specify soft starters on fire pumps

On large fire-pump installations we specify soft starters with internal bypass contactors over star-delta starting. The reasons are mechanical and regulatory in equal measure: lower mechanical stress on the pump shaft and coupling, a cleaner inrush profile that the upstream protection can actually live with, and alarm-only overload behaviour consistent with NFPA 20 practice — because a fire pump that trips on overload is a fire pump that is not pumping.

It costs marginally more at procurement. It costs considerably less across the life of the asset. Ask us to walk you through it during your design review.

IS (Bureau of Indian Standards) · IEC international electrotechnical standards · NFPA fire protection codes, including NFPA 20 for stationary fire pumps. Drawings and test records are prepared to match.

  • Single-line and layout drawings issued before procurement, not after installation.
  • Protection coordination study so relays discriminate instead of tripping the whole board.

Electrical, answered straight

Do you work as a contractor, a consultant, or both?

Both, and deliberately so. We will produce the design and hand it to another contractor if that is what your procurement requires. More often clients ask us to carry the whole scope — design, supply, installation and commissioning — because that is where the accountability stops moving between parties.

Can you work on an energised site without shutting us down?

In most cases yes. We sequence work around your operating hours, use temporary supplies and changeover schemes where the load cannot be interrupted, and agree every planned shutdown in writing before it happens. Thermography and power quality logging are carried out live.

What do you hand over at the end of a project?

As-built single-line and layout drawings, equipment datasheets and warranty documents, insulation resistance and relay test records, torque audit values, earth resistance readings and a thermography baseline. The completion report is written so an auditor or a future contractor can read it.

Do you cover the whole of Jammu & Kashmir?

Yes. Srinagar is our base and our crews travel to sites across the Kashmir and Jammu divisions and into Ladakh. Remote and high-altitude sites are quoted with the additional logistics stated openly rather than absorbed and rushed.

Can electrical work be combined with CCTV or networking in one contract?

That is the usual arrangement. Surveillance, access control and industrial networking are TelKo divisions in their own right, so cable routes, containment, power provisions and commissioning are coordinated between them from the design stage instead of being retrofitted around each other on site.
